Use the words adaptation, structural, behavior and habitat in your answers.

Part A: Suited to survive

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

An adaptation is a feature or behavior that helps a living thing survive and have young in its habitat (the place where it lives).

Structural adaptations are body parts or features. A duck has webbed feet for paddling. A polar bear has thick fur and a layer of fat to stay warm in the freezing Arctic. A camel has wide feet that stop it sinking into sand, and its hump stores fat.

Adaptations of behavior are things a living thing does. Many owls hunt at night when their prey is out. Some birds fly long distances (migrate) to find food and warmer weather. Some animals hibernate (go into a deep, sleep-like rest) through the coldest part of the year.

Plants have adaptations too. A cactus has a thick stem that stores water and spines instead of flat leaves, so it loses very little water in the dry desert.

1.What is an adaptation?
  1. Aa feature or behavior that helps a living thing survive in its habitat
  2. Ba change an animal chooses to make in one day
  3. Ca place where an animal lives
  4. Da type of food

  1. Awater
  2. Bsand
  3. Cfat
  4. Dair
4.Many owls hunt at night. What kind of adaptation is this?
  1. Aa structural adaptation
  2. Ba plant adaptation
  3. Cnot an adaptation
  4. Dan adaptation of behavior
5.A cactus has spines instead of flat leaves. How does this help it in the desert?
  1. ASpines lose less water than flat leaves and help protect the plant from animals.
  2. BSpines help the cactus catch rain.
  3. CSpines make the cactus grow faster.
  4. DSpines help the cactus float.

Part B: Body part or behavior?

6.Match each living thing to one of its adaptations.
  • duck
  • cactus

7.An adaptation that is something an animal does is an adaptation of (answer space).
8.The place where a living thing lives is its (answer space).
9.Is a duck's webbed foot a structural adaptation or an adaptation of behavior? Explain. (answer space)
