Use the words adaptation, structural, behavioral and environment in your answers.

Part A: Life at the extremes

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

An adaptation is a feature or behavior that helps a living thing survive in its environment. Structural adaptations are body parts, such as thick fur. Behavioral adaptations are things an animal does, such as moving to the shade.

Hot deserts have very little rain and are hot by day but can be cold at night. A cactus stores water in its thick, waxy stem, has spines instead of wide leaves, and spreads its roots wide to soak up rain quickly. The fennec fox has huge ears that release body heat, and many desert animals are active at night.

Polar regions are freezing and windy. Polar bears have thick fur, a thick layer of fat under the skin and small ears that lose little heat. Emperor penguins huddle in big groups and take turns in the middle where it is warmest.

The deep ocean is dark, cold and has crushing water pressure. Some fish there make their own light to find food.

1.What does a camel's hump mainly store?
  1. Awater
  2. Bfat
  3. Cair
  4. Dmilk
2.A cactus has spines instead of wide, flat leaves. How does this help?
  1. AIt loses less water and animals are less likely to eat it.
  2. BIt makes more food from sunlight.
  3. CIt helps the cactus float.
  4. DIt keeps the cactus warm at night.
3.Which is a behavioral adaptation?
  1. Aa polar bear's thick fur
  2. Ba cactus's waxy skin
  3. Cpenguins huddling together to keep warm
  4. Da fennec fox's large ears
4.Why do many desert animals come out mainly at night?
  1. AThey cannot see in daylight.
  2. BThere is more food in the dark.
  3. CTheir fur glows in the dark.
  4. DIt is much cooler, so they lose less water.
5.Some deep-sea fish make their own light. Why is this useful?
  1. AThe deep ocean is completely dark, so light can attract prey or a mate.
  2. BIt keeps the fish warm.
  3. CIt helps the fish breathe.
  4. DIt helps the fish float to the top.

Part B: How adaptations help

6.Match each adaptation to how it helps.
  • thick fat layer
  • wide-spreading shallow roots
  • large thin ears
  • keeps body heat in
  • release body heat
  • collect rain quickly
7.An adaptation that is a body part is called a (answer space) adaptation.
8.Classify each as structural (S) or behavioral (B): (a) a bird flying to a warmer place for winter, (b) a camel's long eyelashes. (answer space)

Part C: True or false?

Write True or False.

9.A camel stores water in its hump. ☐ True   ☐ False
10.An animal can choose to grow a new adaptation when its environment changes. ☐ True   ☐ False
11.The Arctic fox's fur is white in winter, which helps it hide in the snow. ☐ True   ☐ False
12.A polar bear's small ears help it lose less body heat. ☐ True   ☐ False
