Free 7th Grade Plant and Animal Cells: Structures and Functions Worksheet

Students learn that all living things are made of cells, the job of each cell structure (nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, cell wall, chloroplasts and vacuole), and how plant and animal cells are alike and different. They classify organisms as unicellular or multicellular, link specialized cells to their jobs and compare the two cell types in an extended response.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Print the PDF or complete it on screen. Write the student's name and date at the top.
  2. Read the instructions for each part together before starting. Encourage working to be shown.
  3. Mark with the answer sheet. Use the model answers and success criteria as a guide rather than a single right answer.
  4. Record the score, celebrate what went well, then follow the "What's next" suggestion.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

7th Grade students (typically ages 12–13) working on cells & classification. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with model answers and success criteria where there is more than one good answer. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 35 minutes for 14 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Plant and Animal Cells: Structures and Functions

If a structure helps make food or support a plant, it is probably found only in plant cells.

Part A: Cell structures

Read the passage, then answer the questions.

Cell theory states that all living things are made of one or more cells, that the cell is the basic unit of life, and that new cells come only from existing cells dividing.

Inside cells are structures with special jobs. The nucleus controls the cell. The cell membrane surrounds the cell and controls what moves in and out. The cytoplasm is where many chemical reactions take place, and mitochondria release energy from food.

Plant cells also have a rigid cell wall made of cellulose, chloroplasts for photosynthesis, and a large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap that keeps the cell firm.

1.Match each cell structure to its function.
  • nucleus
  • cell membrane
  • cytoplasm
  • mitochondria
  • chloroplasts
  • cell wall
  • controls what enters and leaves the cell
  • controls the cell's activities and contains genetic information (DNA)
  • release energy from food during respiration
  • a rigid outer layer that supports and protects the cell
  • jelly-like fluid where many chemical reactions happen
  • contain chlorophyll and carry out photosynthesis
2.All living things are made of one or more (answer space).
3.New cells are made only when existing cells (answer space).

Part B: Plant or animal?

Circle where each structure is found, then write True or False.

4.Where is a cell wall found?
  1. Aplant cells only
  2. Banimal cells only
  3. Cboth plant and animal cells
5.Where is a nucleus found?
  1. Aplant cells only
  2. Banimal cells only
  3. Cboth plant and animal cells
6.Where are chloroplasts found?
  1. Aplant cells only
  2. Banimal cells only
  3. Cboth plant and animal cells
7.Where is a cell membrane found?
  1. Aplant cells only
  2. Banimal cells only
  3. Cboth plant and animal cells
8.Where are mitochondria found?
  1. Aplant cells only
  2. Banimal cells only
  3. Cboth plant and animal cells
9.Root cells deep underground usually have no chloroplasts. ☐ True   ☐ False
10.Animal cells usually have a fixed, regular shape like a brick. ☐ True   ☐ False

Part C: One cell or many?

Unicellular organisms, such as bacteria and amoebas, are made of a single cell. Multicellular organisms, such as plants and animals, are made of many cells.

In multicellular organisms, cells are specialized: their shape and structures suit a particular job.

11.Which organism is unicellular (made of only one cell)?
  1. Aa mushroom
  2. Ban amoeba
  3. Can oak tree
  4. Da frog
12.Match each specialized cell to how its shape helps it do its job.
  • red blood cell
  • nerve cell
  • root hair cell
  • sperm cell
  • long thin fibers that carry messages around the body
  • long thin extension that increases surface area to absorb water
  • disc shape with no nucleus, giving more room to carry oxygen
  • tail for swimming towards the egg
