Arteries carry blood Away from the heart; veins carry blood back In to the heart.
The heart is a muscular pump with four chambers. The upper chambers, the atria, receive blood. The lower chambers, the ventricles, pump blood out. Valves stop blood flowing backwards.
The right side receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the vena cava and pumps it to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. The left side receives oxygenated blood from the lungs through the pulmonary vein and pumps it to the body through the aorta.
Each heartbeat sends a pulse of blood through the arteries, which you can feel at your wrist or neck. Heart rate is measured in beats per minute (bpm). To save time, count for 15 or 20 seconds and multiply up to one minute.
