Free Year 12 Interpreting a Text Through Critical Perspectives: Gender, Class, Ecocritical and Psychological Readings Worksheet

A senior text analysis worksheet on how the same text can support different, well-argued interpretations. Using an original extract about a widowed orchard owner, her seasonal workers and a flood, students learn four critical perspectives (gender, class and power, ecocritical and psychological), find evidence that supports each reading, notice what each reading brings forward or overlooks, evaluate competing interpretations and write a paragraph that weighs two readings against each other. Model answers and a marking rubric are included.

Interpreting a Text Through Critical Perspectives: Gender, Class, Ecocritical and Psychological Readings

Name

Score /

A critical perspective is a lens, not a verdict. The best responses use more than one lens and show which reveals the most.

Part A: Four ways of reading

Answer each question.

1.Match each critical perspective to the main question it asks of a text.
  • gender reading
  • class and power reading
  • ecocritical reading
  • psychological reading
  • How does the text represent the natural world and humanity's relationship with it?
  • How does the text represent gender roles and expectations, and who is limited by them?
  • What inner conflicts, desires, fears or coping mechanisms drive the characters?
  • Who holds economic power, who does the work, and whose interests does the text expose or protect?
2.Which detail most strongly supports a gender reading of Margaret?
  1. AShe walks the rows with a ledger
  2. BThe locals said "a woman alone could not keep an orchard of that size"
  3. CThe pickers arrive in a battered bus
  4. DThe creek turns brown
3.Which detail most strongly supports a class and power reading?
  1. AThe pickers are paid by the crate and live in cabins whose roofs are not repaired
  2. BMargaret's husband died eleven years earlier
  3. CThe trees were planted by her grandfather
  4. DMargaret wears a nightdress
4.The uprooted trees are compared to "something that had been shot". An ecocritical reading might argue this simile:
  1. Ashows nature as a passive resource with no value
  2. Bpresents the land as a living victim, challenging the idea that it can be controlled through counting
  3. Cis purely decorative
  4. Dproves the flood was deliberately caused
5.A psychological reading would most likely focus on:
  1. Athe price of fruit
  2. BMargaret's compulsive counting as a shield against grief and loss of control
  3. Cthe history of orchards
  4. Dthe size of the cabins

Part B: Building and testing interpretations

Support each answer with evidence from the extract.

6.Develop a gender reading: is Margaret presented as a figure of female strength, or as someone shaped by the expectations she resists? Use two quotations.[3 marks] (answer space)
7.Develop a class and power reading of paragraph 4. What does "Nobody had woken her. Nobody had thought to" suggest?[3 marks] (answer space)
8.Develop an ecocritical reading. How does the extract present the relationship between the orchard owners and the land?[3 marks] (answer space)
9.Develop a psychological reading of the ending: why does Margaret not know "what to write"?[3 marks] (answer space)
10.Choose ONE reading. What does it highlight well, and what does it tend to overlook in this extract?[2 marks] (answer space)
11.Margaret "told herself she was watching the trees" (paragraph 3). Show how this one sentence could support TWO different readings.[2 marks] (answer space)
