Ten of the most common words in early reading books: the, and, a, is, I, to, in, it, he and she. Children trace each word, choose the right word to finish short sentences, find each word among look-alikes and count sight words in a sentence. Knowing these words on sight frees children to sound out the rest of the sentence, so reading becomes smoother and more fun.
