Students learn three kinds of conjunctions and what each one does. Coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, so, yet) join equal ideas; subordinating conjunctions (because, although, unless, until, while) add a dependent clause; correlative pairs (both and, either or, neither nor, not only but also, whether or) work together. They choose and use each kind, then combine short sentences into longer, smoother ones.

Conjunctions are the glue that shows how ideas are connected: and, but, because, although, either … or.
Coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) join two ideas of equal importance. Put a comma before the conjunction when it joins two complete sentences. Circle the best conjunction.
Subordinating conjunctions start a clause that cannot stand on its own. If the clause comes first, put a comma after it. Choose from: because, although, unless, until, while.
Correlative conjunctions come in pairs: both … and, either … or, neither … nor, not only … but also, whether … or. Write the pair that completes each sentence.
